Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to collapse abnormal veins by injecting an FDA approved, safe, chemical agent into the vein using an ultrasound to guide the placement of the medicine directly into the vein. The ultrasound is used utilized in order to precisely control our injections and to locate the veins needing treatment. The injected solution then terminates the vein, blocking blood flow and redirecting it through healthy functioning veins. The entire process takes an average of 30 minutes with only mild discomfort, often described as temporary burning or cramping.

This treatment does not require anesthesia, and usually within one week of treatment you can resume normal activity with the exception of any strenuous activities involving your core muscle group such as running, jumping, swimming, and weightlifting. Your physician will most likely recommend several sessions of sclerotherapy in order to achieve optimal results for your vein health. Up to 70% of treated veins can be eliminated with each session, and veins that are responsive to sclerotherapy very rarely reappear, proving its effectiveness. If you’re pregnant, you are not a candidate for Sclerotherapy. If you’ve had a blood clot in the past, eligibility will be decided on a case by case basis.
