The Region’s Leader

As a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the American Society of Liposuction Surgery, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Hansen is the area’s leading expert on laser technology. His continuous research and training in laser surgery, minimally invasive cosmetic surgery and skin care ensure that his clients are being treated by the best in the industry.

Microcannula Liposuction

Widely recognized as one of the safest forms of liposuction. It does not involve general anesthesia, and delivers the smoothest, most natural result, as it uses very small cannulas (instruments used to suck the fat). Local anesthetic is placed in the area to be treated. This makes the area numb and expands the fat cells for easier removal. It also minimizes post-operative bruising which is typically much more severe with traditional liposuction. Since very small instruments are used, only small amounts of fat can be removed with each stroke of the surgeon. This involves more work from the physician, but a smoother, more natural result for the patient. In addition, the patient experiences less trauma with the smaller instruments.

Tumescent liposuction

A procedure in which Dr. Hansen uses a diluted solution of local anesthetic and other medications to fill the fatty layer of the skin before removing the excess fat. This causes the tissue to become swollen and firm, allowing for excellent control. General anesthesia is not required, eliminating potential complications. The result is a sculpting of bulging areas into more attractive contours.

Tumescent liposuction is an outpatient procedure, avoiding a costly hospital stay. Since the patient remains awake during the surgery, Dr. Hansen can ask the patient to change positions, leading to better sculpting of the targeted areas.

Tumescent liposuction has an unprecedented safety profile. It allows for the safe and efficient removal of both deep and superficial excess layers of fat with little discomfort, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic results. Patients see fewer skin irregularities, less bleeding, and reduced bruising.

Power-Assisted Liposuction:

Power-Assisted Liposuction, or PAL, is a procedure performed using a special cannula that uses tiny, rapid vibrations to break up fat cells so that they can be suctioned out of the body. Dr. Hansen can remove more fat in a shorter period of time. This leads to enhanced results, a safer procedure, and faster recovery.

In PAL, the tip of the cannula, the tube used to extract fat from the body, vibrates rapidly. This vibration actually makes liposuction gentler on the body’s tissues because it loosens fat cells and allows them to be easily suctioned away. This specialized cannula allows for smaller incisions and reduced recovery time compared with other liposuction techniques. The vibrating tip used in PAL allows for safer liposuction because of its small, precise motions. Dr. Hansen can target specific areas without damaging surrounding tissue.

Because of the vibrating cannula tip, Dr. Hansen does not need to use as much force during power-assisted liposuction because fat cells are more easily released from the body. This makes PAL useful for treating areas that are notoriously difficult to sculpt, including the inner thighs, belly button area, and male breasts. Because the power-assisted liposuction procedure takes less time to perform than manual liposuction, patients are less susceptible to complications and safety risks.

The Procedure: ProLipo®

ProLipo® is “laser-assisted tumescent liposuction” and is ideal for reducing fat deposits on any area of the body that holds on to unwanted fat. Treatable areas include the chin, neck, upper arms, abdomen, love handles, thighs, bra roll, male breasts, and even knees. Tiny incisions are made in the skin, and a small laser is used to first liquefy and then gently remove the fat from the area being treated. All of this is done using a local anesthetic in a simple outpatient procedure, avoiding a costly hospital stay. Unlike traditional liposuction, the FDA-approved ProLipo® procedure is minimally invasive and does not involve bleeding, stitches, or trauma. Bruising is minimal. Downtime is only two to three days, and results are evident within one week. Tumescent liposuction has an unprecedented safety profile and allows for the safe and efficient removal of both deep and superficial excess layers of fat. Patients will experience a little discomfort, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic results.

Expected Results: Most qualified candidates for the ProLipo® and PAL treatments can expect to see a new, slimmer shape and tighter, more toned skin within one week of the procedure. And the good news? Your fat reduction is long-lasting! A more accurate gauge of your personal results can be determined at your personal consultation with Dr. Hansen.

Renuvion

Renuvion cosmetic technology is a revolutionary procedure that tightens and rejuvenates loose skin without the need for invasive surgery or extended downtime.  This technology tightens the skin unlike any other treatment on the market.  Renuvion is a procedure used after liposuction to tighten the skin, complimenting the fat-removal treatment. This treatment is great for men and women who are frustrated with loose skin or after liposuction.

Frequently Asked Liposuction Questions

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that can change the shape of your body by removing unwanted or excess fat cells. The procedure is performed by inserting a stainless steel surgical tube called a cannula under the skin through small incisions. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and gently suctions the fat from the unwanted areas.

Is liposuction safe?

Liposuction is a safe procedure with some risks of complications. Since the invention of tumescent (local) anesthesia liposuction has become much safer. One of the biggest risks to liposuction is the use of general anesthesia. Tumescent anesthesia allows the patient to be awake throughout the procedure which decreases the risks.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Candidates for liposuction will have overall good health, be slightly above-weight and have supple, elastic skin. Liposuction works best for people who have pockets of unwanted fat that have not responded to dieting and exercise. It is also important to have realistic expectations. We can work on significantly overweight patients but have specific areas of unwanted fat they would like removed.

Can liposuction treat obesity?

Liposuction is not a good treatment for obesity. Most cases of liposuction remove less than eight to ten pounds. Anytime more than ten pounds are removed at a time the risks of significant complications increase exponentially. At Lazaderm®, the average case is less than six pounds of fat removed. We feel it is OK to perform liposuction on obese patients as long as they are healthy, have realistic expectations, and have focal areas of concern.

What areas of the body can be targeted with liposuction?

  • Upper and lower abdomen
  • Flanks and Hips,
  • Inner and Outer Thighs
  • Upper Arms
  • Face, Neck and Jowls
  • Legs
  • Breasts – Male
  • Breasts – Female
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Lower Legs and Ankles

What is the recovery time?

Recovery time varies by individual and by the amount of fat removed from the body. Recovery time also depends on the technique used to perform the liposuction. Most people can return to work within a few days.

How much fat is typically removed?

During liposuction, we are trying to remove enough fat to give proportionate and natural results. Every case is unique. The goal is never to remove as much fat as possible (although I am often told to by the patient) and remove just the right amount in the right areas to sculpt the body. This may mean as little as a few ounces from a chin, or it may be up to eight pounds from an abdomen and flanks. If a patient requires larger amounts, we will break them up into multiple sessions. Safety is always our priority and breaking the procedures up will decrease the client’s downtime and risks.

How long does the procedure take?

Liposuction usually takes anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours to perform, depending on the area or areas treated and is completed on an outpatient basis.

How long before I see results?

The amount of time needed for healing will vary from patient to patient and depend on age, health areas treated, fat removal, and individual healing speeds. Some patients see immediate results that improve steadily while others have weeks of swelling. Most patients will see significant improvement in their shape by about three weeks. The final results can be seen at six to twelve months.

At what age can a patient have liposuction performed?

Technically, liposuction can be performed on anyone 15 to 78 years old as long as they meet health requirements. Skin elasticity is also a consideration when performing liposuction. Dr. Hansen has multiple tools to help with skin laxity to include laser-assisted liposuction and J-Plasma. Both of these techniques can significantly improve lax skin but there are still limitations and some patients may require surgical intervention.

Will I have large, noticeable scars?

No. There will be small 2mm holes made in less noticeable areas. There are no holes made in obvious places that are highly visible. The scars themselves will vary from person to person, but in general they are comparable to acne scars and will fade with time. In fact most people can’t even tell where they are after one year!

Are the results permanent?

Yes. The fat that is removed will never grow back. But, since not all of the fat cells will be removed, if you gain a significant amount of weight the remaining fat cells may get bigger.
