Conservative Vein Therapy

Conservative measures may include anti-inflammatory medications to help with pain management and the dedicated use of graduated compression stockings. We may ask patients with varicose veins to increase their daily walking and exercise, achieve weight loss, and avoid high heels. Historically, both health care providers and insurers have recommended a trial period of conservative vein therapy before proceeding with definitive vein care. Conservative vein therapy is beneficial in reducing varicose vein symptoms and slowing the progression of chronic venous disease.

Common techniques include:

  • Compression stockings, devices and donning supplies
  • Periodic elevation of legs during the day
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Walking 30 to 60 minutes each day
  • Healthy diet and weight loss

Often more than one treatment is used in conservative management plans to treat the patient’s symptoms.
