CoolSculpting, the Trendy, ‘Cool Kid on the Block’

CoolSculpting. You probably have heard all the “cool” advertising; it is one of the trending words on the airwaves and on social media. CoolSculpting has been promoted as a way to lose stubborn belly fat with no surgery and no downtime. It is now the number one, non-invasive fat reduction procedure.

So just what is CoolSculpting?

It is called cryolipolysis – a treatment that freezes and eliminates unwanted fat cells. The treatment was developed by Harvard University scientists and based on the idea that cold can selectively affect fat cells. During a CoolSculpting session a molded cup is placed over a desired area. As the technique is gentle; no numbing medication or anesthesia is needed. The suction pulls the fat into the cup where it is frozen. The fat cells are destroyed and gradually removed by the immune system over the course of three to four months.

The appeal is that it is totally non-invasive with virtually no down time. It targets fatty areas that seem resistant to exercise (pooch bellies, back fat and persistent love hands don’t stand a chance). And better yet, CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared. Sessions take 35 minutes per cycle. The first ten minutes of each cycle clients will experience mild stinging. Clients can return to work that day, but won’t see full results for about three to four weeks. They will also experience swelling, soreness and tingling in the treated area well over a week after treatment. It is recommended that clients should wait at least four weeks before undergoing a second cycle.

CoolSculpting is meant for clients who want a small reduction in localized trouble spots. The procedure is most successful for those within 20 pounds of their target weight; the average person will see about a 20 to 25% reduction in treated fat.

All important is the consultation. Clients need to discuss their expectations and then feel comfortable with their proposed treatment plan. It is good to keep in mind the procedure is not a replacement for weight loss and does not tighten skin. Clients should be aware that getting rid of stubborn love handles, for example, sometimes takes more than one cycle.

“Depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals, your personal consultation is the ultimate starting point,” says Dr. Hansen. “Also important is our great staff. They take the time to get to know you, answer your questions, and make you feel comfortable throughout a CoolSculpting cycle. As our patient we want you to feel completely satisfied with the experience.”
