What is “Permanent Cosmetics?”
Permanent cosmetics are also known as micropigmentation, cosmetic tattooing, or intradermal pigmentation. This is a method of applying a natural or synthetic pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. This technique has been medically developed and specifically designed for safe, permanent application. In addition to eyebrows, eyeliner and lips, permanent make-up can also treat skin irregularities, scars and areolas.
You would benefit from Permanent Cosmetics if you are:
How is the procedure done?
A sterilized, disposable needle is used to implant hundreds of tiny dots of colored pigment beneath the basal (top) layer of the skin, enhancing natural features.
Eyebrows: The Intradermal Pigmentation procedure for eyebrows can mimic the appearance of hair in the brow line. Anyone who desires more fullness of the brows will love this procedure and the time that is saved by not applying make-up. Those who normally use pencil can go swimming, play tennis or wipe their forehead without the embarrassment of losing their eyebrows. A subtle natural look, mimicing thousands of tiny eyelashes with the implantation of pigments in the lash line, is popular with both male and female clients. An additional showing of color can be added for a soft, natural line or a bolder, definite line. Brows will be tender for 1-2 days, appear dark for 5-6 days, then dramatically soften up to 50%.
Eyeliner: Soft color can be applied as an enhancement or a thicker line for a more dramatic effect. Dimension is created by implanting more color to the outer edges and tapering to the center. No more runny, smudgy eyeliner. Expect the eyes to be tender for 1-5 days. Lips: It is possible to change the appearance of the size and shape of the lips as well as the color. This procedure helps prevent lipstick from bleeding into the surrounding skin. A soft pink, similar to the lip color of a newborn baby, is popular for those wanting a natural look. A more dramatic color can be achieved if desired. Lips will take longer to heal. The color will be extremely bright for 7-8 days then fade 60-70%.
Does the procedure hurt?
Most people experience some discomfort from permanent cosmetics. This may vary according to each individual’s pain threshold and the skills of the technician performing the service. HOWEVER, there are different methods available to help with pain management, including various topical anesthetic ointments, anesthetic locals and nerve block (administered by a doctor). Your technician will discuss these with you to determine which one suits you best.
How long does each procedure take?
The initial procedure will generally take approximately 3 hours. Follow-up care usually does not require as much time as the initial procedure.
What is the recovery time for permanent cosmetics?
Recovery time is different for everyone, but a general rule would be 3-7 days on the surface and another 10-14 days below the surface. It is common for the person to return the work the same day with mild swelling. Lips will have some residual swelling and will chap. There may be slight swelling after the eyeliner and brows may look darker than usual- all of which will soften in a few days.
Are Permanent Cosmetics truly permanent? How long will it last?
Permanent cosmetic procedures are considered permanent because the color is implanted into the dermal layer of the skin and cannot be washed off. However, as with any tattooing fading can and often will occur, requiring periodic maintenance. Re-enhancements, “refresher color boosts,” are recommended for maintenance usually between 2-5 years. A variety of factors influence the longevity of Permanent Cosmetics. Ultra-violet exposure from sun or tanning booths, various drugs, excessively dry skin and smoking are all factors that may affect this. Alpha-hydroxy acids, Retin-A and glycolic acid must be kept away from treated area. These substances slough away top layers of the skin and eventually the layer that the pigment has been implanted into.
What’s a Touch-Up and do I need one?
A touch-up is a color re-enhancement. Almost always the implanted color is not perfect after the first procedure. These procedures are processes and at least one follow-up to the initial procedure should be scheduled. Touch-Up’s should be done 4 to 6 weeks after initial procedure. Colors will appear darker and somewhat unnatural for the first few days, but then lighten to a completely natural look during the following few weeks. Pigment colors can be soft and natural looking, or a bit more dramatic. If desired, your end result may be deepened with additional applications.
